Book & Giftware Stall

Way back when many of you were in kindergarten the church’s first (and for a long time only) woman elder set up shop in the church hall with a modest selection of second-hand paperbacks in three banana boxes.  Her aim was to sell them to raise a little income for church funds.

The rock-bottom prices having quickly attracted customers, she then “press-ganged” two of the congregation’s newest members into the management of what is now the venerable “Book & Giftware Stall” and a focal point in the Church Hall for browsing, chatting with friends and visitors while also finding a good bargain.

In addition to the regular generous donations of a wide choice of reading materials, the Stall also offers church souvenirs and kindred items:  attractive practical mugs, multi-purpose tea towels, coasters, Bibles and church booklets, Celtic souvenirs, and greetings cards galore for all seasons and near-on all occasions.

The mark-up on any bought-in items is kept to the minimum while still making a small profit because all our income goes towards the maintenance of the Church’s presence and work in and around Geneva.

However, we’re not merely a “business” venture.  We’ve also become something of a venue to exchange news, seek information such as   “where’s a good place to eat on Sundays?” or “how far is to Interlaken?” or even “how much does a postcard to Sydney cost?”

So whether you’re new in town or a long-time expat, don’t be shy, just come along to say “how do” – and perhaps even find something irresistible that you didn’t know you’d always wanted.

In any event, you’ll be warmly welcomed by Antonia. Claire, Joan, Lily, Mary, Suzanne and me.

Craft Group

We are a group of women (men are not excluded) who meet on a monthly basis, taking turns to host our group.  Amongst us are those who knit, crochet, sew and paint, to name a few of the skills.  Just as important, though, is the fellowship and laughter.  We have a stall at the annual Church Fair where we sell our efforts.

Refreshments and Sunday Lunches

Refreshments are served every Sunday,  by a group of volunteers, in the Salle upstairs.

Everyone is welcome to attend Sunday lunch in the Salle on the last Sunday of each month. In a gathered congregation like ours, the lunch provides an opportunity to get to know others better while enjoying a meal together.

Each time, we serve anything from 15 to over 30 lunches. Not knowing in advance just how many will attend does make catering a challenge, but somehow we do manage. A two-course lunch (hot food in colder months) with drinks is served – and all for the modest suggested donation of CHF 12.

Volunteers to help with providing food or with serving and clearing up on the day are always welcome.

Church Fair & Ceilidh

We hold an annual Church fair in the Salle de Delices in Grand Saconnex, each November.  The Fair is an all-day event, with an extremely popular Ceilidh in the evening.  Not only is there a wide variety of stands but the Geneva Pipes and Drums play, throughout the morning, enticing locals to follow the sound of the bagpipes.  This event really is a fixture within the international Geneva calendar.

As if this does not work enough, we put on a Ceilidh in the evening, hugely appreciated by the Swiss.  Once again food is served and popular Scottish beers are to be had.
